December 2008 (BC)

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me - six skeins of Sundara Sock Yarn

Okay, so it's not the sixth day of christmas, and I bought it myself, but for your viewing pleasure, may I present six skeins of Sundara Sock Yarn:

And, just so you can get a closer look, they are:

Starfish Glow

Love Letter

Mint Over Chamomile

Forest Splendor

Denim Over Teal

Violet Over Bluebells

This was a subscription to the Artist's Choice collection. You picked three or six skeins, from cool, warm, or mixed palette. I chose six of the mixed palette, and I think it's an excellent group. There are colors I would have probably never picked out myself, but they are just lovely.

Pretty. Uh, when is the sixth day of Christmas?

One day soon, I will know html

And this blog will look half decent. There used to be a lot of neat features to Blog-city. Sadly, those are gone, and I still don't like the new format. So, I figure I need to become an html wizard and not depend on the quirky widget mode.

I'm almost done with my course for this semester, and it will be a relief. I've enjoyed it, but I'm really ready to have no demands on me. I'm tired.

Arwen was a spectacular mess, so I've ripped out and will knit it like a normal sweater, with a back, two fronts, and two sleeves.

Can I turn this in for credit?

Stolen from FarmWife and Cynical, because it was way more fun than the homework I'm trying to finish:

A is for age: 35

B is for burger of choice: My own, with Wendy’s single hamburger - pickle only - in second place. My hamburgers are goooooooood.

C is for the car I drive: 2007 silver Dodge Charger (1998 purple Dodge Dakota 4x4 as back-up)

D is for your dog's name: no dogs, but my first dog was Lucky, because he survived being born in the winter, when his four siblings and mother froze, however he wasn’t able to survive THE SCHOOL BUS RUNNING OVER HIM AND THE BUS DRIVER JUST SAYING, “WELL KRISTI, I RAN OVER YOUR DOG!” Not that I’m bitter.

E is for essential item you use every day: yarn. If I didn’t have it, it wouldn’t be pretty.

F is for favorite TV show at the moment: Lost, when it’s actually on

G is for favorite game: sudoku

H is for home state: Illinois

I is for instruments you play: I played the clarinet once upon a time.

J is for favorite juice: ruby red grapefruit.

K is for whose bum you'd like to kick: Students who wait until the last minute to register for classes then get rude when you don’t have time to drop everything and cater to their every whim, because several hundred other people had the same idea. Sorry, there will be a wait, and getting ugly with me moves you to the absolute end of the line. I can bury you in my inbox and you will never be heard from again.

L is for last restaurant at which you ate: Dairy Dee

M is for your favorite Muppet: Grover (or Rowlf the dog, if it needs to be a True Muppet)

N is for number of piercings: One in each ear, but I haven’t worn earrings in years.

O is for overnight hospital stays: None, and I’d like to keep it that way, if possible.

P is for people you were with today: Ramblin, my mom and uncles

Q is for what you do with your quiet time: Knit, spin, read.

R is for biggest regret: No regrets. The Universe unfolds as it should.

S is for status: Content in a committed cohabitation (We can’t get married, we still like each other.)

T is for time you woke up today: 10:00 am

U is for what you consider unique about yourself: What isn’t?

V is for vegetable you love: I love them all, but if I have to pick one, I guess it would be tomatoes.

W is for worst habit: Procrastination.

X is for x-rays you've had: Dental, ankles, chest, probably others

Y is for yummy food you ate today: ham and beans for lunch at Mom’s, cube steak with rotini, broccoli, and cheese for supper. All good.

Z is for zodiac: Aries – the sign of the sheep. Go figure I would be a knitter and spinner.

Bus drivers are such compassionate people. Poor Lucky and the rest of his family.

Stick it with a fork

I'm done with the semester!!!! Glorioski! Of my class, that is. Still have students to deal with at the job. Presuming I haven't failed horribly (the research paper was spectacularly bad, but I did really well on everything else), I am half-way through the concentration courses, 2/3 through the whole thing. Three courses to go, plus the T-word. Although, I can opt to to a 'Culminating Project' instead, at the cost of taking two four-hour exams, as opposed to only one four-hour exam if you do the thesis.

I have about a month off from coursework. And as of about 11:00 EST next Tuesday, I will be off work until January 5. Yay!!!! I shall knit and read and spin and bask in the gloriousness that is no homework.

I headed out of work a scosh early today. My boss called me to see if I had checked on the radar lately, and recommended I do so, because she was getting some conflicting reports. I didn't see any precip, but just then my phone blinged a text message at me from Ramblin, saying his boss was heading toward the town I was in, and her windshield was icing up. Greeeeaaaat. I drove very slow, with only one small slide, and two anti-lock braking incidents. Both times, I was only going 20 to begin with, if even that fast, once for a stoplight, once for a turn. I coasted right on through the turn, and had to turn around and try it again.

I love loathe winter.

I finished the hood on Arwen. Now I just have to knit sleeves in a normal manner. For those of you who hadn't been playing along at home, the original pattern called for the sleeves to be knit horizontally as part of the front, then wrap around the arms. It wasn't good.

It looks like 3 out of 4 house mates are commencing snoozing. I'm just glad to be sipping coffee while snuggled in my recliner and not out on the roads.

Be careful out there, if you have to be out there.

Color me stunned

I got an A on the research paper and it looks like an A for the course.

It's a Xmas miracle.

I don't remember if I've mentioned it before, but I'm loving the Sookie Stackhouse books .

Way to go!!!

Merry Christmas!

It's 7

As in the temperature. 7. That's not a temperature, it's a group of dwarfs. Windchill is -13. I don't even have anymore words to say about that.

Birthday socks are completed for Ramblin's dad.

And the requisite closeup.

So, that finishes up the required knitting for the year. What's left on the needles? Arwen. As I told Ragged, it's always Arwen. Sigh. One day, she'll be finished. If I don't run out of yarn. Yes, it's a risk.

This week I work tomorrow, then two hours on Tuesday, have the university-wide party, then I am free, free, free until Jan. 5. Sweet.

It's beginning to look a lot like xmas

No, no, not that, this:

That's what I'm talking about. Ragged and Brando both got me Loopy Ewe gift certificates, and I spent them right away.

This is the first skein of Dream in Color Smooshy I have ever bought. What took me so long? I have no idea. By the way, the color is Visual Purple. It looked to be solid-ish on the website, which is not like DIC at all, so I'm very pleased with the variation in my skein.

And the infamous Malabrigo Sock in Violeta Africana.

It's more purplely in person, but you know it's winter, we had ice today, and the sun is never going to shine again.

This is from the Sanguine Gryphon, Eidos Sock Yarn in Emoige.

I love her roving , it only made sense I would love her sock yarn. Yep.

And last but not least, Prism Merino Mia in Wisteria.

I became enchanted with this one as soon as Sheri posted it, but it was a little beyond my willingness for a pair of socks. Then I saw Anne Hanson's Spiraluscious would only take one skein of it, and I could have myself a sweet little project.

It's entirely possible this could be casted on tonight.

What's that, you say? Aren't I forgetting someone? Oh yeah, her.

Eh. I'm sure a lovely little lacy cowl couldn't take that long to knit. For now, just call ol' Arwen Venus.

It's a tur-duc-hen!

Oh wait, that's Copper. Maybe this is it.

Yeah, that's the tur-duc-hen, alright.

And this tur-duc-hen was prepared by yours truly. My mom and I were supposed to get the bird(s) going together, but when it appeared Mom was sleeping in, I forged on myself. This was the first time I've been the primary cook, though I have been the sous chef for years.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret - do you know why most people say they don't like turkey? Because most people prepare a turkey like this:

And they stop, putting it on to roast. But it's not ready for the oven.

Now it's ready. Seriously, the moat of dressing is a requirement. Because this is what you get.

Funny story - after I got the bird(s) in the oven at 6:30, I went back to bed. Mom woke up around 7:00, realized it was too bright to be 6:00, and in a panic rushed to the kitchen to put on the tur-duc-hen, only to discover it already cozy in the oven. She declared it a Christmas Miracle. This wouldn't be the last Christmas Miracle of the day she would have.

Yes Virginia, there really are people that win more than a free ticket on those crazy things. My family is quite taken with the scratch-offs for special occasions, and up until now, the most won on a single ticket was probably $10. Yay Mom!

True to my word, I have started the Spiraluscious Cowl.

Hope everyone had a Merry Xmas!

Finishing some loose ends

Done!

And done!

That's right, Arwen is finally done. I was starting to sweat it, because the yarn was depleting rapidly and if I would have ran out, I was going to rip it into a million bits.

And now, interestingly, I have no immediate project at this second. Oh, there's always the Impressionist Socks, or Bayerische, or the not-really-Philosopher's Wool sweater, or Vail, or Morrigan, or Lily II. But I think, instead of finishing off any of those, I will be starting something new (surprise - Hello, I'm an Aries). Ragged was kind enough to lend me a book that has an absolute stunning afghan in it, since I didn't want to buy the book for one pattern, and that copying a pattern is WRONG AND PUNISHABLE BY LAW, not to mention that Karma will kick your @$$, ahem - where was I? Oh yes, since she was kind enough to lend it to me, I should really get a move on and get that done, so I may return it to her.

This morning was somewhat of a rude shock. At some point in the night, the power went off. I'm not sure when, but check with Ramblin', since he got his cell phone to use as an alarm. I know I asked him once, and it was five-ish, but how long it had been off I don't know, because I sleep like the dead and am completely unaware of things going on around me. Anyway, I woke up about 9:30, and still no power. The house was about 62, so not toasty, but by no means unbearable. Then it was 10:00, then 11:00, still nothing. Finally at 11:40, it came back on. Ramblin' called an hour or so after that to check on the power situation and that on the way to work, he saw what was most likely the cause of the outage. Apparently, a woman was texting and driving and managed to take out a utility pole. Nice. (Update: not a texting driver, two girls stole the car. Geez.)

Power restored, house cozy, cats passed out, cup of hot tea at my side, new project dancing in my head - that works for me.

Lovely all! Kids these days. Can't live with them, and can't get them to move out when you want. Oh wait, mine are only 14 and 11, right?

New project!

This will be the Sampler Afghan from Cables Untangled by Melissa Leapman. I'm using Wool-Ease (Gasp! Yeah, whatever.) in Oxford Grey, since I got 29 skeins of it on a meetup in E'ville a couple of years back. Jenny from the Blog, Ragged and I got in on a JoAnn Fabric clearance bonanza, in their preparation to open the superstore in the old Best Buy building (that used to be The Children's Palace, way-back when). There's not much complete, but I haven't been working on it that long, either.

And in other news, because I know you love it - new yarn!

That's Handmaiden Casbah in Pansy, 80% merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon. Mmmmm.

Tonight we're staying in, with some homemade vegetable soup and coffee. On the Loopy Ewe blog, Sheri was asking what resolutions people were making, and I came up with a few.

1) Use my rower. Seriously, I've had it for about a year and a half. I've used it twice. Pathetic.

2) Finish the kilo of Parrots roving. Once again, been working on it over a year and a half. Time to get that show on the road.

3) Focus on the positive in life, and let the other stuff go on by.

4) Find healthy new recipes to try. I get incredibly bored of Cooking. The. Same. Stuff. The problem is it's tricky to find things I like. I'm a purist, a term made up by me which means I don't want goop on anything. Remember the Saturday Morning "Don't Drown Your Food"? I took that to heart. I can eat just about anything plain, it's when you start adding stuff that throws me off. The only condiment I use is dill pickles. So all the exciting recipes for Apricot Ginger whatever are not going to be on my list.

Hope everybody gets a extra helping of willpower and stick-to-it-tive-ness for the New Year.

Do you like asparagus? I have a very simple recipe you might like. :)

Also, parrots roving, that sounds very familiar . . .

November 2008 (BC)

From Socktoberfest to NaKniSweMo

No, I haven't started speaking in tongues, November is "National Knit a Sweater Month", a parallel to NaNoWriMo. The challenge is to knit a sweater of 50,000 stitches or more in the month of November. Here's what I have so far:

That is the back of A Cardigan for Arwen, out of Berroco's Comfort in Rabe. Several of the folks that knitted this pattern on Ravelry made major modifications to it, but I'm going to roughly try it as is, and if I want to make another later, I can decide what I would do differently. Although, I have done the hem by provisionally casting on, then knitting a hem stitch with a body stitch, so I don't have to sew the hem later. That's just a crime against nature. Here's a close up of the stitches (the yarn is a solid color, any shading is due to light and shadows):

In a while, we'll be departing for our biannual dentist appointment. I have the best dentist and dental hygienist in the world. This from a person who had total fear of dentists. Now, even if I have to have a filing, it's no worries.

Of course first, we'll be heading to the polls to vote. With our state already a lock for our party, it doesn't matter that our county usually goes the other way. Then, all that's left to do is wait. I hope it's decided quickly and of course, I hope my guy wins.

What it all boils down to is who best represents your interests, which are not going to be the same as your neighbor, and may not be the same as other people in your family. But neither option is bad or evil, and anyone who tries to convince you of that only has his or her own interests at heart, not yours.

Even then, wanting to accomplish it and getting it accomplished are two very different things, due to both sides (yes, both sides, we're all guilty of it, so nobody gets the moral high ground in this one, I've watched the West Wing, I know what's *really* going on) not being able to compromise, because everything is so polarized.

Which is why I'm still in favor of anarchy.

You said it sister! I am just glad we can still vote our conscience in this country. I pray it continues to stay that way. Happy Poll Day!

Loopy Goodness

First of all,

As the picture above suggests, we waited until after the dentist appointments to vote, hence the dark photo. However, there was enough light left to show you this:

I was just about overwhelmed at the Loopifiable Loopifiedness of it all. And, this marked my first shipment with the Loopy Kisses-Chocolate Edition. (Summer heat is not kind to chocolate loopy kisses.) Let's introduce these lovelies one by one.

The yarn on the right has an interesting story. I saw this yarn, Araucania Forest solid, and thought it would be perfect for Ramblin's dad. So I ordered it. Later I was looking at my Ravelry stash and saw that apparently I had that same thought when we were in Springfield. Maybe it's not the same color, I thought. 104. 104. Cr*p.

However.

Looks pretty different to me. I would have been able to use it regardless, but I'm very pleased to have two unique yarns to knit with.

Next, let's talk about that beauty in the middle. That's Theresa's Italian Vineyards, from the Loopy Legends line by Zen String. The last time this popped up was before our vacation, and I couldn't justify an order right before I was going to be there in person (silly girl). Then, it came up last Monday in the sneak-up, and I told myself I didn't need it. That worked until Friday, when I was forced to take advantage of the Trick-or-Treat sale. Forced, I tell you. Anway, this came along for the ride.

As gorgeous as that may appear to you, it's even more astounding in person. How could I have ever though I didn't need that?! It's purple, it's green, it's perfect!

Speaking of purple and green,

(It's purple and green, trust me)

Rio de la Plata in Grape Rosin. It reminds me very much of my much-adored Trekking, and it supports Uruguayan women.

So, I have plenty to knit tonight as we await the results. As if I didn't before.

I can't see purple without thinking of you. And of course green makes me think of Chris. and now I see she thinks you're rubbing off on her. green and purple. makes me want to buy more yarn and I have enough for a decade or two.

What you said!

How could I forget the Spooky Socks?!

Well, it was probably in the rush of setting up the entire Halloween display, distributing candy, and taking it all back down in one day. But nonetheless, there they are in all their spooky glory.

A Cardigan for Arwen (ACFA?) is progressing. I have the back done, and have started on the front/sleeve/hood. For those of you who have not looked into the possibility of making Arwen, it's got some interesting construction. You cast on the front, knit for about a foot, then cast on for the sleeves longways (that's the best description I can give without a schematic), and then you also continue on the neck stitches for half of the hood. There's been quite a bit of modification done by several knitters, with several mentioning sleeve width and length. Since I have baboon arms, I'll need to plan for this.

I haven't cast on any new socks since finishing the Halloween socks. I know, I know, something's wrong in the Universe. I have some in mind for the Ravelry Sockdown! - November challenge. The challenge is either the November Mystery Sock, a WendyKnits pattern, or a slip-stitch pattern. I *think* I want to make the Lava Flow Socks by Sockbug from my Claudia Handpaint Purple Earth. But I need to keep in mind that I need to have a pair of socks knitted for Ramblin's mom for her birthday. Not that two pair of socks in one month should be a problem at all.

And now, I'm going to try to knit away this very trying day.

STR Raven Series+Zombie Socks+Nearly Done= very happy knitter

I like your Halloween inspired socks too!

Progress, I haz it

Let's give this a try.

Wooo!!!!! That is a picture not uploaded to Blog-city, but from Flickr. Sweet! I had been thinking that it was kind of a waste of Interwebs storage to upload it twice, since all the knitted stuff goes on Ravelry. Oh yeah, back to Arwen. I have completed the back, left front, and half of the left sleeve. Check out this cable.

It's reversible. Which means, I can't just purl the purl stitches on the cable rows. Yeah, I just lost the non-knitting readers with that statement, but trust me, it keeps you on your toes.

Speaking of toes, there have been no socks cast on since the completion of the Spooky Socks. I *could* finish the two pair I've abandoned.

Uh-huh. I could sure do that.

Yup.

Wow, you are moving right along. Beautiful.

Latest Acquisition

Since the sun will never come out in a timely fashion for me to share this with you all, here is my Briar Rose Fibers' Grandma's Blessing in all its flashified glory.

Eee. Yeah, the flash does it no justice, but maybe it will be sunny again one day.

I strongly suspect that when I get it in daylight - even more lovely. Although, I'm pretty smitten with it now. The Briar Rose Fibers booth at Greencastle is always a stunning array, and every year, I'm too overwhelmed to make a purchase. The Interwebs provide a perfect buffer to allow me to think straight and actually pick something out.

I ordered this Sunday and got it today. That included a mail holiday yesterday. Friends, that's lightning-fast shipping.

So, there you go, I have done my enabling for the day.

Jealous (1)

Well, that was quick

Hmmm, how did it get to be November 25?

We've been just a bit busy. We visited with Ragged and Cynical. We went to my mom's for first shotgun deer season, with Ramblin filling both tags in a day. In between, there was the usual work/sleep cycle.

And, for those of you keeping score at home, xmas is a month from today. That's right, 30 days.

There's also been precious little sun when I need it, so you'll be treated to flashy pictures until spring. Sorry 'bout that.

I got my third shipment of Wool2Dye4 undyed sock yarn club.

That is W2D4 Bamboo Two Step, a sock pattern with an innovative-sounding heel, and a sample of Eucalan grapefruit (yummy!) wool wash. You need a closeup of this yarn. Here.

There will be one more shipment March-ish, then I can decide what my favorite is. As a reminder (because I myself had lost track) I have received Socks2Dye4 and BFL Ultra . So, I think the final one will be the Platinum Sock.

And Arwen, she's still progressing.

What remains is one half of a sleeve, the hood, and side seaming. Then Aunt Viola, it's done. The NaKniSweMo deadline shouldn't be a problem.

I have some socks in progress again, finally. But the colors are so pretty, I think I'll wait until Friday, when I will be 'not shopping' and can get a good daylight pic.

Tomorrow Ramblin and I will be heading to my mom's, in preparation for consuming the Best Bread Dressing in the World, also known as Thanksgiving. It is the most heavenly, moist, succulent, sagey, savory (wiping drool off the keyboard) stuff ever. None of that nasty, dry, 'crack-a-windshield' brickbat dressing. No sir.

Hope everybody has an excellent Turkey Day!

Will admit that I am not a grapefruit fan, but I really like the Eucalan version. I use it every time I wash my handknits. :)

October 2008 (BC)

A day late to Socktoberfest

Well, I hoped to kick the month off right, but missed the first day of SOCKTOBERFEST!!!!!!

Eee. That's a little blurry, but I'm too lazy to walk back in to the good light. I promise a better picture at some point. Anyway, that's Twisted Flower sock by Cookie A. The yarn is Louet Gems, originally not purple, but it is now. That's some of the lovely yarn dyed the weekend Ragged and Cynical came to visit. I am very, very pleased with this sock. I must be, to knit it top-down, and one at a time. I could have done both, but meh, I didn't.

Stay tuned for more sockie goodness.

Absolutely fabulous! I love it.

Getting in the 'spirit' of the season

There, that's a bit more festive. (On the old blog, I had changed the color scheme and made the header in 'spooky' writing)

Now, about those clearer pictures I promised.

Isn't that better? Here's even closer.

Despite it being more twisted stitches (I just can't help myself), the pattern moves very quickly.

This weekend will be one of homework, another meeting of the Cache Slash Crew for the rapidly (two weeks - eek!) approaching Fest, with a little knitting tossed in on the side.

Sock quandry

Well.

I finished the first Twisted Flower sock. And I. Am. Not. Happy. It's not the sock's fault, it's my weird leg/foot size. We're I a tiny, petite thing, it would probably be perfect. But I'm not. I'm around 5' 10", so the feets are bigger, and the leg is bigger. The sock is stretched on the leg, and the foot had to be extended so much it made the pattern very odd.

So, now what do I do? It's not a pattern that is easily modified, and since I'm doing this for Sockdown!, I want to try to stay true to the pattern. The only thing that comes to mind is knitting it on size 1 instead of size 0, which is what's recommended for a larger size. The reason I didn't in the first place is I like firmly-knitted socks, and I thought maybe I would be okay (ha). I'm definitely not jazzed about the prospect of a limpy-wimpy sock.

Drat. Drat. Drat.

So, I suppose (sigh) that I will try the second sock on 1s and see what happens.

What else is going on? Well, it's less than 11 days to the Cache Slash Fest. Eek. We're at our usual level of preparedness. That should tell you a lot.

We continue to run a person short in our office. We keep thinking things will slow down, but we start registration for spring in less than three weeks. No rest for the wicked.

Three more days of work, then a three-day weekend. Yesssss!!!!!!!

I've learned that it pays to have friends with smaller feet. Then you can still make the patterns you want. Of course, it's not as satisfying as knitting them for yourself, but what can you do?

Sock quandry, Part II

Do you like these socks?

Here's a closer look.

Here's the situation. The socks are Komet by Stephanie van der Linden (free Ravelry download) in Cherry Tree Hill Potluck 'Water'. They are for someone else, someone who does wear rose and the bright turquoisey blue. But, because they are not my colors, I have no idea if they look good or not.

If you don't mind them, or even think they're pretty, please leave a comment. If you don't like them, you don't have to leave a comment, because I'm ambiguous enough the way it is.

Thanks!

'A visitor' left this comment on 13 Oct 08
Can you open up the pattern a bit? I think I am ambiguous too.

Sock Quandry: Part II (revised)

Okay, how about now?

Wow, that looks completely different, doesn't it? Yeah, well when I started the pattern on these socks, I was in low light, and read 'follow the chart'. So I did. I didn't look at the little numbers off to the side that read "1, 3, 5, . . . ." In my slight defense, another pair of socks in progress you actually do patterning on every row, so when this pattern didn't mention anything about the even rows (no 'on 2nd round and all even rounds, work even' or 'knit 9, purl 2', nothing), I didn't give it a second thought.

Unfortunately, I didn't discover this until I had already made the heel turn. I know, I know, it seems hard to believe, but we're in the throes of Cache Slash prep, and focus is a little distracted. There really wasn't any other choice than to rip out, because these socks are my entry for Sockdown! October on SKA over in a little thing called Ravelry. They kind of need to be made right. And I think they look better now.

It's kind of weird to be operating outside your color realm, but not everyone likes purple. I have no idea what's wrong with those people.

So, friends of the blogosphere, what say you?

I likes 'em. I likes 'em a lot! Very pretty. But then, I like springy colors too...I like most colors....it's a bit hard to displease me in the color arena. Just my two cents.
'Needlefingers' left this comment on 13 Oct 08
I'm right there with you, Chris. The person I'm intending them for is definitely a 'spring' color person, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed. If nothing else, they'll keep her feet warm anyway.

Much better. They seem to flow now. As to color, meh.
'A visitor' left this comment on 13 Oct 08
They're a little to asymetrical-ly for me. I like really even patterns. Kind of like cookies. You can't have an odd number of cookies so you always have to bake and eat them in evens. :)

Normal, or something like it

Cache Slash Fest 2008 is in the books. Now the recovery begins.

I finished some socks.

The recipient appreciated them, I do believe. As a reminder, that's Cherry Tree Hill Potluck in Water, in the Komet pattern. (Go join Ravelry , and you can knit 'em too)

And I bought some more sock yarn. It is Socktoberfest, after all.

That is Fleece Artist's latest sock yarn, Trail Sock in the Forest colorway. Yes, I know it's not purple.

I also bought two more skeins of Dream in Color Classy in Dusky Aurora in hopes it would somewhat work with the other five skeins I bought on our visit to The Loopy Ewe . Eh, it will take some plotting.

The newer skeins are on the right, with representatives on the left. All beautiful, but definitely unique. Such is handpainting, thank goodness. Sameness is so monotonous. However, I will need to be creative to make this work without being obvious.

If you'll excuse me, I think I need to go sleep.

Spooky Socks!

That is Opal Rainforest Schmetterling (butterfly). I went to the yarn shop looking for something that screamed (pun intended) Halloween, and there it was.

I've had a request to share just how it is that I do my gussets for toe-up. And I'm really glad I was asked, because I had to think about what it is I do, and see if there's any rhyme or reason to it. Turns out, there is! Who would have thought. :)

(If you are not a knitter, or maybe even if you are, this is going to be painful. You may want to just catch the next post.)

My standard sock recipe is 72 sts on a size 0 needle for yarns like Opal, Trekking and the like. I cast on 16, increase to 72 and place a safety pin. If I'm doing a short row heel, I knit 72 rows from that point, work the heel, then I knit another 72 rows, do 11 rows ribbing and cast off in ribbing.

Every time I do a toe-up gusseted sock, it's like a brand new day and I measure and calculate and theorize. Not anymore. Now - I have a plan.

The sock begins the same, but I will need to increase for the gussets at some point. I measured across my heel and determined I needed a heel width of about 2 1/2", or 18 sts at my gauge. It's 1/2 of stitches at the bottom of the foot. So, increasing two stitches every other row will take 18 rows. I want to be at the usual spot I would start a short row heel when all the increases are done, so 72 rows - 18 rows = 54 rows for the start of the gusset increases.

How I work the increases: pick up a stitch the stitch below, knit across, pick up a stitch in the stitch below.

Then once all the increases are worked, ready for a right side row, I knit across 18 stitches for the gusset, knit 17 and wrap the next stitch, leaving 18 sts unworked on the other side. Turning the work, I would purl 16 and wrap the next stitch. Turn, work to one stitch before the wrapped stitch, wrap that stitch, and so on, until you have wrapped all but six stitches (1/3 of the heel stitches). Knit across those stitches, then knit across the wrapped stitches, picking up the wraps and knitting them with the stitch to be worked. Turn and purl across, again picking up the wraps and purling them with the stitches. Turn, and knit into the front and back of each stitch, which will give you your 36 stitches again. Purl across.

Time for the heel flap, which I worked a standard k1, sl1 since it's a stripy yarn (I like eye of the partridge if it's a hand-dyed, because it's pretty). Sl1, K1 across 35 stitches, ssk the final heel stitch with one stitch from the gusset. Turn, sl1, purl across to one heel stitch left, P2tog with one stitch from the other gusset. Continue in this manner until all gusset stitches are worked. In my particular case, this will be 36 rows. To avoid holes, I might pick up a stitch from the front needle in the row below on either side and knit it together with the active stitches.

Then I would knit the additional 72 rows, yada yada.

If you've seen Ramblin's blog, you'll know the story of the Zombie Phone . Well, here's the Zombie Socks (no, not those Zombie Socks [Ravelry link] , though I should totally knit some - 'tis the season, and all) back from the dead, or at least back from the unraveled.

These are the Twisted Flower socks, reknit on size 1, and much better for it.

And in keeping with the sock theme, since it is Socktoberfest, the sockaholic has been caught red-handed. Or maybe red-eyed.

Only four days of Socktoberfest left!

Those do scream Halloween. Verra cool. And love, love, love the twisty socks. So beautiful and so intricate.

candy candy candy candy candy candy candy candy candy candy

How can you tell when you have enough candy?

When the cat is afraid of it.

You can tell by the look on Copper's face, he's not too sure about this. And he's our foodie, so if he's alarmed, you know you are talking about some serious candy. Tugger, however, thinks this needs more investigating.

And in other non-candy news, one Spooky Sock done, and another one started (not shown).

Tomorrow is the big day!

Which one are you?

I knew it would be awesome. Some year we are just going to have to drive over to see it.
